Organized Session: Understanding Spasticity
Beverly Cusick, PT, MS, NDT, COF
In children born prematurely and those with diplegic cerebral palsy (CP), findings obtained with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) are challenging the accuracy of the definition of CP as “a motor disorder caused by a static lesion to the motor cortex resulting in spasticity,” and so, the appropriateness treatment strategies that target spasticity. In this program, the instructor discusses research on spasticity and “spasticity reduction” interventions aimed at deformities and gait pathology in children with CP. She invites participants to consider the significance of deficits in—and orthotic management strategies that optimize – functioning body and joint alignment and postural control.
