Calling all orthotists! TheraTogs inventor Beverly Cusick will be presenting a live, in-person 90-minute presentation as part of the AOPA National Assembly 2021 national conference.
Clinical practitioners commonly use the term “muscle tone” to describe different conditions and use various methods to attempt to quantify it. In the didactic portion of this program, the facilitator clarifies the currently accepted definition of human resting lower limb muscle tone in terms of the length-tension relationship with particular attention to the hamstring and triceps surae muscles. She relates movement strategies to the development of typical ankle function and equinus deformity, and reviews clinical assessment procedures for hamstrings length and ankle dorsiflexion (DF) range of motion (ROM) in detail with video recorded demonstrations. She introduces the DF end range at R1A in the hypertonic triceps surae muscle group and explains its relevance in standing and walking. She brings the assessment findings to a discussion of implications for setting the ankle angle in an AFO and for detecting and reporting orthotic management outcomes.

Developmental Orthopedics – Assessment Skills Lab Session
Lab participants will execute 14 musculoskeletal assessments on each other under supervision by TheraTogs inventor Beverly (Billi) Cusick. These participants will complete the program by participating in a live case presentation in which they will be asked at random to execute an assessment procedure.
Prerequisites. This lab program is open only to clinicians who have completed the one-day or two-day versions of the seminar program entitled: Developmental Orthopedics of the Trunk & Lower Extremity.
Enrollment is limited to 15 participants. After 15 are registered, additional interested attendees may place themselves on a wait list. Enrollment status is determined on a first-come, first-served basis.
This is an intermediate-level course; prerequisite training is required as noted above, and pre-course review materials are issued.
Dress for Lab. Lab enrollees should come dressed to undergo LE assessments requiring skin marking and palpation of the greater trochanter and fibula head.

Have you noticed lately how you rarely hear the word alignment mentioned, either by professional conference presenters or in rehabilitation-related literature? Perhaps participation is more important. What do you think?
On April 13 at 2:30 PM MDST / 4:30 PM EDST, The Cusick Center for Learning will host Straight Talk: Does Alignment Matter in Pediatric Therapy? — a live panel discussion on the relative merits of alignment and participation as management priorities.
The on-screen panel features some of the most well-known names in pediatric rehabilitation: Beverly (Billi) Cusick, Dr. Mary Massery, Dr. Susan Hastings, Mindy Silva, and Vincent Leddy.
